FOREWORD
Professionals involved in the health sciences are
receiving an increasingly high volume of information regarding
innovations and new technologies in all fields of medicine. We are all
exposed to symposiums, congresses, workshops, hands-on courses... so
much information, that very often is difficult to collect, assimilate
and store properly. In this scenario Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM) is a
must for those practising in the XXI Century.
Scientific knowledge obtained thorough
EBM must be carefully combined with the experience of the health
provider and the expectations/desires of the informed patient. We need
to keep-up our knowledge not only to achieve excellency in the medical
attention we are delivering to our patients, but also to improve the
training received by our residents. Continued education, adaptation to
new technologies and skills are important for our professional
development and for our patients care
The "traditional" abstracts books
delivered in meetings give us only a light brushstroke of the works of
the authors, and many of them do not arrive to the general public as
papers published in the speciality journals. Many times the lack of
time, the language difficulties, or the lack of institutional support
are serious handicaps for authors all over the world willing to share
their knowledge with their colleagues.
This volume covers news aspects of
maxillofacial surgery in its full scope: esthetic surgery, orthognatics
and distraction, oncology and reconstruction, dentoalveolar surgery or
implantology. We thought that it was a great opportunity for all
delegates attending the XVIIIth Congress of the EACMFS, to recover as a
book/CD the extended versions of the papers presented during the
meeting. In this book you will find not only articles from the keynote
speakers that participate in the Main Round Tables, Controversies and
State of the Art lectures, but also the contribution of surgeons willing
to present their experiences, innovations and opinions in all fields of
cranio-maxillo-facial surgery. Authors of the articles include
accomplished experts that provide excellent information on contemporary
and avant-garde techniques.
We want to gratefully acknowledge all
the persons involved in the organization of the contents of the
Proceedings (from Medimond to the Organizing Committee) but specially to
the contributing authors for their time, efforts and hard work.
